Will Norma Ever Break Free from Her Demons? Find Out at Sunset Boulevard
Alone in the dark, with little more than her celluloid memories, Norma Desmond remains what she has always been — the greatest star of all. This September, she will reclaim the spotlight once more during a special presentation of Sunset Boulevard at the Victory Theatre.
In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded, silent-screen goddess, Norma Desmond, lives in a fantasy world. Screenwriter Joe Gillis, on the run from debt collectors, is persuaded to work on Norma’s “masterpiece.” Seduced by her and her luxurious lifestyle, Joe becomes entrapped. His love for another woman leads him to try and break free with dramatic consequences. Based on the Billy Wilder film, Sunset Boulevard is the portrait of a forgotten silent star, living in exile in her grotesque mansion.
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning masterwork of dreams and desire in the land called Hollywood includes lush, swelling standards “With One Look,” “As If We Never Said Goodbye” and “Perfect Year.”
The performance will occur at The Victory Theatre. The Victory was designed by noted Rogers architect A.O. Clarke and opened in December 1927. The theater was renovated several times as a movie and vaudeville theater before closing its doors in the early 1970s. In 2008, with generous help from the Wal-Mart Foundation, donors and volunteers, the City of Rogers purchased the Victory Theater with an agreement that it would serve as the long-term home of the Arkansas Public Theatre.
Sunset Boulevard opens on September 14th and will run through September 30th. Tickets are available for purchase and start at $28.
